Photogenik alternatives: 5 pose apps by need (Oct 2026)

Want coaching without a subscription? Superpose is the closest fit. PoseCam, Pose Genius, Onpose and Photography Poses suit other needs. Facts as of 21 Oct 2026.

We make Onpose, one of the apps on this list, so we're not neutral. Facts about each app come from App Store listings and Apple's public data; the sources and the dates we checked them are at the end of the page.

  1. Superpose

best for coaching while you shoot, with no subscription

Generates AI pose variations from a photo you take and shows them as an outline on your camera. It adds coach tips for you and the photographer, and real-time checks on lighting, framing and composition. Generation runs in the cloud through an AI provider; in-camera guidance runs on the device. It has the highest rating of the pose apps we track: 4.80 from 295 US ratings (21 Oct 2026). Pick this if you liked Photogenik's coaching but don't want a subscription.

    Free daily Shot Packs; 5 packs $2.99 or 20 packs $9.99, one-time (US, 21 Oct 2026)

  2. PoseCam

best for live pose matching, with a pay-once option

Lifts the person out of any reference photo and overlays them on your live camera, with drag, pinch, rotate, mirror and opacity controls. Pose Assist coaches you live until the pose locks in green, and Auto-Capture is a Pro feature. Its listing says your photos stay on your device and no account is needed. It has 4.56 from 16 US ratings (21 Oct 2026), so there's little public feedback yet. Pick this if you want live feedback on your pose and would rather pay once than subscribe.

    Pro $6.99/month or $49.99/year, or $59.99 lifetime (US, 21 Oct 2026)

  3. Pose Genius

best for AI pose suggestions and a 500+ pose library

An AI scene scan suggests poses for where you are, on-screen pose overlays sit in the camera, and you can save poses from your camera roll or screenshots. The library has 500+ pose ideas, including couple and group poses. Its listing calls it a paid app, with a free or low-cost trial for most new users, and doesn't say where its processing runs. It has 4.64 from 236 US ratings (21 Oct 2026). Pick this if you want AI suggestions and a big library, and you're fine paying after the trial.

Paid app with a trial; $9.99/week, $19.99/month or yearly from $47.90 (US, 21 Oct 2026)

  4. Onpose

best for trying an overlay free, with no photo uploads

We make Onpose. It shows a see-through pose over your live camera, from a library of 66 poses or any photo you've saved, such as a Pinterest pin. Browsing, the camera and lining up are free; taking and saving photos needs Pro. There's no account, and Onpose doesn't upload your photos or reference images. It has no AI coaching, no couples set, an English-only app and no App Store ratings yet. Pick this if you know the pose you want and want to line it up before you pay.

$7.99/week or $39.99/year (US App Store, October 2026)

  5. Photography Poses゜

best for photographers directing someone else

A library of 15,000+ poses with descriptions and prompts, plus camera-settings guides, client email templates and contracts. The description calls the app PhotoX, and the listing says you can keep using it free without Premium. It doesn't describe a camera overlay, and its last update was on 12 Dec 2024. It has 4.72 from 325 US ratings (21 Oct 2026). Pick this if you're the one holding the camera and want ideas to give the person you're shooting.

Free to use; optional Pro listed from $5.99 to $99.99 (US, 21 Oct 2026)

If you liked Photogenik’s coaching but don’t want a subscription, Superpose is the closest alternative. It coaches while you shoot, gives you free Shot Packs every day, and sells one-time packs instead of a subscription. PoseCam, Pose Genius, Onpose and Photography Poses゜ each suit a different need, covered below.

We make Onpose, one of the apps on this list, so keep that in mind. Every fact here comes from the apps’ US App Store listings and Apple’s public data, checked on 21 Oct 2026. We haven’t hands-on tested these apps yet, so this isn’t a ranking.

Why people look for Photogenik alternatives

Photogenik 2.0, released on 5 Oct 2026, rebuilt the app around spoken AI coaching, and its App Store listing now says “An active subscription is required to access the app.” Listed US prices on 21 Oct 2026 were $5.99 a week, $11.99 a month or $79.99 a year. If you’re looking for a free way in, or a different style of guidance, the apps below are the options. Our Photogenik vs Onpose page compares the two in detail.

How we ordered them

The need is “help me pose while I’m shooting, like Photogenik did”. So apps that guide you live come first. Within that, we favoured apps you can start without paying. Onpose comes fourth because it doesn’t coach you: it shows the pose and leaves the matching to you.

App Guidance while shooting Free to start Photos processed US rating (21 Oct 2026)
Superpose Coach tips, outline overlay, lighting and framing checks Yes, daily free Shot Packs On device, plus cloud for generation 4.80 (295)
PoseCam Pose Assist live matching, overlay Freemium; Auto-Capture is Pro On device (stated) 4.56 (16)
Pose Genius AI scene scan, overlay Trial, then paid Not stated 4.64 (236)
Onpose Overlay only, no coaching Line up free; saving needs Pro On device (stated) No ratings yet
Photography Poses゜ None described Yes, per listing Not stated 4.72 (325)

Prices may vary, and each app’s in-app paywall is the authority.

If you direct someone else

Photography Poses゜ is for photographers, not for posing yourself. It’s a big library of ideas to give the person in front of the camera, with no camera guide. If that’s you, it’s the best fit here. For posing yourself, start with our guide to how to pose for photos.
